February 22, 2014 – The 2014 racing season kicked off when the Gebhardt Automotive Cycling Classic was held this past weekend near Carter Lake in northern Colorado. The inaugural road race featured a quick 17 mile looped course with a short, yet steep, climb in the first 4 miles and a very quick decent about half way through the loop. The Category 5 racers only completed 1 lap while the rest of the Categoried riders would ride 2 or 3 laps (sometimes different for men and women in the same category) and the Pro/1/2 riders had to complete 4 laps. The temperature hovered in the low 50s until later in the afternoon when wind and clouds started rolling in.
Josh Yeaton [Horizon Organic / Einstein Bros Bagels Cycling Team] crossed the line first after 4 laps in the Pro/1/2 Men’s race with a time of 2:44:07.23 with an average of 41 minutes and 24.7 mph per lap. Lauren De Crescenzo [DNA Cycling – K4 Racing] won the 3 lap Pro/1/2 Women’s race in a time of 2:25:44.37 (average lap time of 48.5 minutes and 20.4 mph). Congrats go out to them.
Heath Holmes from pedal Racing showed up to represent in the Cat. 5 race. See his report here.
