Tuesday night marked the beginning of pedal RACING’s 2015 Indoor Training Series. This is a 10 week program, coached by Jason Short of Threshold Endurance, which will help us keep the edge we gained in 2014 and sharpen it further for 2015.
We started the night by quickly setting up and starting our warm up. It had been snowy and cold for a couple weeks leading up to the start of the training so most of us were happy to get on our bikes and get riding – not to mention several of us needed to undo the holidays. The space was perfect for a group our size and the landlord (Grant) was very accommodating. You could feel the excitement & anticipation in the air because we had all been warned that the night would not be easy – but it would be fun and the pain would only be temporary!
After our warm up we launched into the night’s torture – a 20 minute FTP test. The only noises in the room, for the next 20 minutes anyway, were the sound of trainers spinning, heavy breathing, occasional coughs & sniffles and Jason’s professional encouragement and guidance. Needless to say it was painful (for me anyway) but the data that comes from this will be vital in our training for the next 10 weeks.
After the pain subsided (and the time ran down) we all started to soft pedal to cool down for 10-15 minutes. After the cool down we all gathered at the front to get a brief overview of what the next 10 weeks will entail, test out the various exercise balls to find our correct fit, discuss & vote on the strength training portion of the series and introduce ourselves.
pedal RACING has grown significantly in just the past couple months so there were several people in attendance that I knew by name only (and David and I have certainly seen every name that has come through the contact forms for registration). We all learned last year that there are many benefits that come from a training series like this. Training indoors is a great way to get to know the team, put in some base miles, focus on our bodies, build camaraderie, and have some good times while it’s cold outside.
It was hard. It was fun. It was a great way to start the year!
Special thanks to Jason Short, Tiffany Short, Bill Nagel and Grant Whiteside for their excellent, and continued, support of pedal RACING.
