ALWAYS USE PROTECTION!

Hey guys, John Flora here, your legal sponsor. I’m sending out a PSA to the team on an important topic that no one thinks about until it’s too late. Here goes:
You wouldn’t think of heading out on a training ride without your helmet. But when was the last time you checked your other protection – your auto insurance coverage? Believe it or not, your auto policy covers you when you’re riding if you have an incident with a vehicle. Every time we head out for a training ride we put ourselves at risk. If you haven’t already, it’s an unfortunate fact that sooner or later you will likely have a run in with a vehicle. Hopefully you will walk away from it. If not and you need to make a claim, your insurance policy comes into play when the other driver has little or no insurance to cover the claim. Studies show that 1 in 7 Colorado drivers is uninsured.

I tell everyone (especially road cyclists) who will listen that they should purchase as much auto insurance as they can afford. Colorado only requires a minimum of $25,000 in coverage. That minimum will just about pay for a day in the hospital and surgery to repair a broken collar bone. If you’re hurt worse than that and the other driver is under- or uninsured, you’re looking at a very expensive problem. This is why you need to protect yourself with good coverage and not rely on the policy of the offending driver.

Surprisingly, it’s not that much more expensive to purchase a policy with protection of $100,000 to $300,000 or more. Call your adjuster and ask. Then ask yourself if that extra $50 to $75 per year is worth the added security. I can tell you horror stories of cyclists with significant injuries caused by uninsured drivers. Without sufficient insurance to cover the claim there is only so much a lawyer can do. If they had only had more of their own auto insurance the outcome would have been much more favorable.

The bottom line is to get protected now in case you need it later.
